What it is
Torri Superiore is a medieval stone settlement in the Ligurian hills near Ventimiglia. A community project active since 1989 restored the deteriorated village and brought permanent life back into its dense network of rooms, passages and terraces.
Today the place combines resident community, hospitality, food, courses, cultural activity and small-scale agriculture. The official site continues to host workshops and group stays, while the community cooperative manages much of the ecotourism and cultural programme.
How it works
- Restoration: regeneration happened through inhabiting and repairing an existing settlement rather than replacing it with a new eco-development.
- Hospitality: guest rooms, collective meals, courses and group stays provide an economic interface between the resident community and visitors.
- Food: local and organic food, agriculture and olive cultivation connect the settlement to its surrounding landscape.

Community / operating model
The resident community is supported by a wider organisational structure rather than functioning only as a collection of private households. The Ture Nirvane community cooperative manages ecotourism, courses, seminars and cultural activity.
Current community-cooperative information describes roughly twenty resident adults and children, alongside non-resident members and guests. Visitors are folded into the place through shared meals, stays, training and volunteering rather than being separated into a conventional hotel experience.

What makes this difficult to copy?
Torri Superiore is not a fast regeneration formula. Its revival has involved decades of restoration, resident participation, volunteer effort, hospitality and sustainable-tourism activity rather than one completed construction phase.
The architecture can be admired in a day; the operating model cannot. Replication depends on a community willing to maintain shared life and an economy capable of supporting long-term restoration without turning the settlement into a conventional resort.
